Minibuntu – the base for your distro, now add your ingredients
Nov 23, 2007
A few days ago a guy on UCK forum told me that he would need a clean Ubuntu livecd without all the bells and whistles, without gnome and all the graphic releated software, a sort of minimum system to build on his new Ubuntu derivate, starting from a clean base.
I thought it was a really good idea to publish the minimal Ubuntu package set packed in a small bootable livecd ISO image.
This is minibuntu, the base Ubuntu system, ready for your ingredients to cook your own Ubuntu derivative.
Hope you like the idea, please let me know what you think about that.

Could you please post up a package list?

sure i’ll do that asap, I’m creating the launchpad page right now:
https://launchpad.net/minibuntu
anyway it just contains ubuntu-minimal and ubuntu-standard metapackages

Thanks, now i can use the *buntu rather than the Debian Net-install minimal CD. I guess. With 18mo of support rather than years for Debian.
Really, I like the *buntus but if I wanted a more customized distro, basing it on *buntu isn’t the route I’d take. Too many variables with not enough experienced users in the *buntu world to get them fixed.
It wouldd have been nice had the *buntus just stayed a lot closer to their Debian base, IMHO. I’ll still use Kubuntu on the desktop, but a cusome install, I’m not so sure.

@lefty.crupps:
I could agree to your point of view but the relationship between ubuntu and debian is a complex talk…
anyway this (minibuntu) is just a way to make people more interested in linux (as the general meaning) which I think is always a good thing :-)
